These Wildcats showed heart

by Darin Allred
Gainesville Daily Register

While it might not have been David vs. Goliath, it sure felt like that Saturday night when the Callisburg Wildcats took on the Bushland Falcons in a Class 2A state semifinal football playoff in Wichita Falls.

Bushland was undefeated and heavily favored. Their school is just on the outskirts of Amarillo (population 173,627). Callisburg is just on the outskirts of, well, Walnut Bend.

The David vs. Goliath analogy was even more appropriate for the Wildcat defensive backs, most of them around 5-feet, 10 inches, who had to try and cover Falcon receiver Crockett Gillmore, who had to have been at least 6-6. Gillmore finished with five catches including three touchdowns.

But in this David vs. Goliath match, Goliath might have come out on top, but let me just say that he came away with more than a few bruises from flying rocks.

Callisburg fell behind 14-0 early in the first quarter and you could just feel an uneasy feeling on the west side of the stadium where the Wildcat fans were sitting. Their team had made an historic run through the playoffs. The Cats had never even won a playoff game in school history until last year, and now here they were in 2009 playing in the state semifinals. I’ll admit, when Bushland scored those two quick touchdowns, I thought the rout would be on. Luckily I don’t play for Callisburg.

The Wildcats never thought they were out of it. In fact, they battled back to tie things up 14-14 at the end of the first quarter. They were down by two scores again at halftime (28-14), but just like they did in the first half, they came right back and eventualy took a 34-28 lead.

Bushland would eventually use a strong fourth quarter to win 42-34, but there wasn’t a person in that stadium Saturday that thought Callisburg didn’t deserve to be there.

The Wildcats displayed heart and played their guts out, literally. After being injured while playing defense in the second half, Callisburg senior quarterback Bobby Dorman was seen throwing up on the sideline. But he shook off the injury and the brief queasy stomach to go back in the game.

There were other moments like that. Football is a brutal, contact sport and several Wildcat players got nicked up or bloodied when they got knocked down, but they always got up and they played hard until the final whistle.

Their fans were amazing as well. I think the entire Callisburg community was in Wichita Falls Saturday, along with a good portion of Cooke County who went to cheer on the maroon and white. As I drove to the game on Hwy. 82, I saw businesses in both Lindsay and Muenster that had put signs of encouragement up for their county team.

So I want to thank the Callisburg players and coaches for a magical playoff run that was fun to watch for fans like me, but could also be used as encouragement for teams or players that have always been told they are not big enough or strong enough or fast enough to play with the big boys. Trust me, Bushland knows different.

Wildcats bow out in state semifinals

The Wildcat football team's Cinderella run came to an end last Saturday in Wichita Falls when they succumbed to an undefeated Bushland Falcons team 42-34 in a hard-fought state semifinal battle.  The Wildcats finished the season with a 12-3 record, the best run in Callisburg school history.

Wildcats chosen as the Army Strong team of the week

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football is proud to announce that the Callisburg High School Wildcats football team has been named the Army Strong Team of the Week for Division 2A.

The Callisburg Wildcats were chosen for this honor because of their teamwork, dedication, discipline, personal courage and integrity, values shared by U.S. Army Soldiers.

“Callisburg's outstanding defense came up with a big play to secure a 21-13 win over previously unbeaten McGregor,” said Adam Hochfelder, general manager of Dave Campbell's Texas Football. “The Wildcat defense sacked the quarterback on a pivotal fourth-down play in the final two minutes to stop McGregor's last drive. Callisburg now advances to face Bushland in the state semifinals.”

The award will be presented to the team at a time to be determined later this week by a representative of the U.S. Army.

"The U.S. Army is recognizing the student-athletes at Callisburg High School for demonstrating qualities similar to those exhibited by its Soldiers. Student-athletes and Soldiers share similar values, but more importantly they must be mentally, emotionally and physically strong," said Captain Joshua Fishman. "We expect to see some of these young men competing at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, the college level, or maybe even professionally in the future."

Powderpuff Football

The annual Powderpuff football was held last week at Wildcat stadium.  In the opening bout the freshman girls came from behind to beat the seniors.  In the second game the sophomores beat the juniors to setup the battle in the finals between the freshman girls and the sophomore girls.

The sophomore team handled the freshman girls in the finals to take the title.

The highlight of the night might have been off the field as the freshman and sophomore cheerleaders showed off their skills as they performed routines with great precision choreography.
